Play31 is a volunteer based NGO focusing on human rights and conflict resolutions through a determined effort involving…. soccer tournaments!
Soccer is a sport bringing people together across nationality, culture and religion. It creates a happiness that in some instances can help overshadow sorrow and disagreement and unite nations that has been torn apart by conflict. Play31 organize soccer tournaments in areas plagued by unease and discord amongst the citizens due to war and political conflicts. The tournaments are for everyone – men, women and children, and they are followed by dinner and activities arranged in cooperation with the locals. These tournaments are often the scene of the first exchange of words or even physical presence for some of the conflicted communities.
The organizations name is inspired by the UN Convention on the Right of the Child article 31 that stipulates that all children have the right to play. Since the Danish branch of Play31 started in 2008 the organization has reached more than 50.000 people in conflicted areas such as Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. The Lauritzen Foundation is happy to support Play31 with 25,000 DKK, so that the organization can spread its fantastic work to even more countries.
